Well what can i say the wii event here in Adelaide at Tea Tree Plaza
was funny.
I got there about 2pm in the afternoon on Thursday 9th November 2006 and as soon as i got there i noticed something was wrong. There was flicking on the screens and
washed out colours on 2 of the three setups. I'm thinking to myself
crap someone plugged it in wrong so I quizzed one the promoters about
it and he just didn't understand the problem. He was trying to call
someone for advice but i told him it was plugged incorrectly into the
TV. He couldn't get the person he wanted so he asked me if i knew
anything and said "feel free to have a look anyway". They had the
component cable plugged in but they mixed up the Red video component
cable with the red audio cable an easy mistake seeing they are the
same colour (even though the Audio cable had L Audio on a small tag on
the cable) After I fixed that up all was cool he thanked me and allow
me and my girlfriend to have a bit of extra time on the systems.
The promoters also experienced technical problems with the system,
obviously due to lack of training. An example of this was when one of
the promoters was standing too close to the screen and was standing
above the sensor bar. This combined with the colour issues on the
screen, our initial impression of this system was not great.
Once these problems were sorted out, we trialed Zelda, Wii Play and
Wii Sports and were very impressed! My Girlfriend and I enjoyed the
Wii Tennis game on Wii Sports and the multiplayer aspects of the
system are a lot of fun. My girlfriend also really enjoyed the Wii
Play games, in particular 'Charge'. Zelda seemed fun but not an
appropriate game for a demo environment when you only have a short
space of time to test the game. One disappointment was no 'Exite
Trucks' to demo. Also tall people seemed to have more trouble
adjusting to the controller, as it appeared the systems were
configured for shorter people around 5 foot 2. It will also be
interesting to see what games will be released following the launch.
A few things that bugged me was the Nintendo promoters appeared to
have no passion or little knowledge of the Nintendo Wii. Why don't you
employ some Nintendo fans to do the work? hell I'm sure that some
would do it for free! I was at the event for about one hour and not
once did I see any of the 4 promoters approach people that were
standing and having a look or entice them to come for a closer look or
a trial one of the systems. Also there was no information on display
regarding the cost, launch date or where to purchase the new system
unless you stumbled across the ebgames book on one side. The price
was only on display around some of the promoter's necks.
Overall it is a great system that is highly entertaining and we were
impressed with the mutiplayer aspects of Wii Sports. This would be a
lot of fun to have at parties in your lounge room at home with or
without alcohol!! : )
